Autumn in Washington state is truly breathtaking. The leaves are shades of orange and yellow with pops of red peeking through, the air is crisp, and the gray of winter is nowhere in sight. It’s my favorite season for many reasons and it is the best time for taking road trips! In October, I visited Union Gap for the first time and was so impressed by the amount of fall and Halloween activities they had to offer and it made for an amazing weekend getaway from Seattle. In this article, I’ll share with you everything you need to know for the perfect fall getaway to Union Gap, Washington. And, I’m now looking forward to a spring or summer visit as well.

Where is Union Gap, Washington?

Located in the heart of Yakima Valley, Union Gap provides an ideal home base for those wanting to explore the picturesque region. This centralized location offers easy access to the stunning natural beauty and recreational activities of the Yakima Canyon, the Ahtanum State Forest, and several hiking trails and paths located in Union Gap and the immediate area. From Union Gap, visitors can embark on outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, and fishing along the renowned Yakima River, go wine tasting in the heart of Washington wine country, and enjoy nearly a dozen microbreweries all within a short drive.

Union Gap is a short two-hour drive from Seattle and as you near the town, you’ll see some of the best views of Mount Adams, the second-tallest mountain in Washington state. The route along I-90 is the fastest way to reach Union Gap from Seattle, and if you have the time and are traveling between May and October, I highly recommend taking Highway State Route 410 on the way back home for fantastic views of Mount Rainier and trails such as Naches Peak Loop where you can stretch your legs and take in the views. If you’re traveling after October, keep in mind that the mountain pass of this highway closes during the winter months.

What is Union Gap Known For?

Union Gap has several calling cards that it’s known for including Los Hernandez Tamales (more on them later), Miner’s Burgers, and the Central Washington Agricultural Museum. In fact, the Ag Museum is one of the largest agriculture museums in the Pacific Northwest! One of many Ag Museum highlights is the self-guided audio tour which covers 33 of their exhibits. There are also vintage tractors and tons of antique farm equipment that you can view. They regularly host schools for field trips and there are numerous events held at the Ag Museum each year. The most popular of these events are the Old Town Days and Civil War Reenactment which take place every Father’s Day weekend, and the Pioneer Power Show & Swap Meet on the 3rd weekend of August. Visiting the Central Washington Agricultural Museum is a must when visiting the area, and best of all - it’s free!

Another thing that this area is known for is hops. If you didn’t know the major crop that’s grown in the state of Washington is hops and Yakima Valley produces about 75% of the hops grown in the United States with over 19,000 acres solely devoted to hops. Hops harvesting takes place in the fall which is another reason why visiting the area in October is perfect. There are nearly a dozen local breweries, and thus far, Single Hill Brewing and Valley Brewing Company are two of my favorites located just a short 10-minute drive from Union Gap.

Fall Festivities in Union Gap

Union Gap, Washington offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy, especially in the fall months. There are an array of scenic hiking trails in the nearby surroundings, catering to both beginner and experienced hikers. For those with a penchant for unique finds, Union Gap boasts a small assortment of vintage shops known as the Vintage Loop that are perfect for uncovering hidden treasures and one-of-a-kind items. If you’re a foodie, you’ll be surprised and delighted at the opportunity to savor award-winning tamales that people from all around travel for. With its blend of outdoor adventures, shopping experiences, and delectable cuisine, Union Gap is one of Washington’s small towns that shouldn’t be overlooked.

On top of all of that, Union Gap really outdoes itself when it comes to fall activities. Below are some of the top things to do in Union Gap in the fall.

Union Gap Corn Maze

When you think of fall activities, the first that come to mind are probably corn mazes and pumpkin patches. Queue the Union Gap Corn Maze. Each year, the maze features a unique design, presenting an exciting challenge for maze-goers to navigate through the towering cornstalks and uncover hidden checkpoints. Families and friends can recharge at the on-site pumpkin patch, where they can select vibrant pumpkins to bring home as festive decorations.

Additionally, the maze offers a variety of games like cornhole and pumpkin chucking (my personal favorite!), adding an extra layer of excitement to the overall experience. After dark, the corn maze becomes haunted for those who dare to enter. Whether exploring the maze during the day or embracing the thrill of a nighttime adventure, the Union Gap Corn Maze promises an unforgettable and joy-filled autumn outing for the whole family at an affordable price.

Halloween Movie Fest at the Majestic Theater

The Halloween Movie Fest was hands down my favorite fall activity we did during my trip to Union Gap. During the month of October, the Majestic Theater dedicates some of its theaters to Halloween classic films such as Pumpkin Head, Jeepers Creepers, House on Haunted Hill, and more. Tickets are under $10 per person for a double-feature and it was so much fun to watch older horror films with popcorn and snacks in hand.

Malloween at Valley Mall

Each October, Valley Mall in Union Gap, Washington, hosts a spooktacular event called Malloween, where families and friends gather for a day of Halloween-themed fun and festivities. The mall transforms into a Halloween wonderland, with costume contests, trick-or-treating, and special activities and crafts for children of all ages. Malloween at Valley Mall embraces the excitement of Halloween creating a truly entertaining experience for all who attend. And who knows, you may even have the chance to meet the Sanderson sisters!

Union Gap Skateland

Union Gap’s Skateland celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023 and is the oldest roller skating rink in the Northwest, which is still owned by the founding family! During October, Skateland pulls out all the stops for their annual Halloween events, creating a thrilling and family-friendly atmosphere for all. From spooky skate nights to costume contests, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Families can look forward to special Halloween-themed skating sessions filled with eerie decorations, fun games, and seasonal music to set the mood. The highlight of the event is the highly anticipated costume contest, where skaters of all ages showcase their creative and spooky Halloween ensembles, vying for exciting prizes and bragging rights. Skateland’s Halloween events promise a ghoulishly good time, perfect for creating lasting memories.

Madd Hatter’s Haunt

If the haunted corn maze wasn’t enough of a scare for you, head to Madd Hatter’s Haunt for a spine-tingling fright! This haunted house stands out with its meticulously designed sets, attention to detail, and an immersive experience that leaves visitors trembling with fear and delight. The atmosphere is infused with a sense of eerie mystery and suspense, as guests navigate through dark corridors and encounter ghastly characters lurking in the shadows. Each step is met with anticipation, as unexpected scares and spine-tingling encounters keep visitors on their toes. Madd Hatter's Haunted House is a must-visit for those seeking an adrenaline-pumping and unforgettable haunted experience. This haunted house is extremely popular and admission starts at under $15 per person. They even host a Family Day for those who want to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the haunted house. The lights are left on, taking away the suspense, and it becomes an event that families with younger kids can also enjoy.

Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt

While you’re enjoying the fall activities throughout Union Gap, you can participate in the Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt photo contest! Keep your eyes peeled for scarecrows around town and once you find one, snap a picture of yourself with it and share it on social media for a chance to win an array of prizes such as free entry to Madd Hatter’s Haunt, the Union Gap Corn Maze, merchandise, gift cards, and more! There are 20 scarecrows hidden across town and each one earns you an entry to win a prize so the more you find, the more chances you have of winning. We found two scarecrows during our stay, how many will you find?

Hotels in Union Gap, Washington

During our weekend in Union Gap, we stayed at the newly opened Holiday Inn Express. This hotel is conveniently located in the center of town on a quiet street and has plenty of parking. The rooms are spacious and modern making this a great option for both business and leisure travelers. This hotel is a budget-friendly option with an average price of $150 per night. Guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi, and access to a fitness center during their stay. Aside from Holiday Inn Express, other great options in Union Gap include Best Western Plus Ahtanum Inn and Super 8 by Wyndham.

Best Places to Eat in Union Gap

Los Hernandez Tamales

If you could only eat at one place in Union Gap, make this culinary gem your top choice. Founded by Felipe Hernandez in 1990, this family-owned establishment has flourished into a renowned destination for authentic Mexican tamales. The restaurant gained national acclaim when it received the prestigious James Beard Foundation America's Classics Award in 2019, a testament to the exceptional quality and tradition upheld in its savory tamales. The accolades don't end there; the eatery has also won numerous regional and statewide awards, solidifying its status as a must-visit for those seeking genuine, mouthwatering tamales in the Pacific Northwest.

Pork and chicken are favorite classics offered year-round, but customers flock to Los Hernandez for seasonal specialty flavors like the asparagus and pepperjack cheese tamale. We tried a new flavor, Nopales, or cactus, and it was absolutely delicious!

Miner's Drive-In Restaurant

To my surprise, Union Gap has a Hamburger Trail. Yes, you read that correctly. Just like Wine Trails, but with hamburgers and Miner’s is one of the main stops. This iconic diner has been serving up delicious, classic hamburgers for 75 years, making it a beloved local favorite and a must-visit for travelers. The menu features a variety of mouthwatering dishes, but the standout items are undeniably the juicy, flavorful hamburgers that have kept customers coming back for generations. Additionally, Miner's Burgers often hosts seasonal car shows that draw in locals and visitors alike, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere perfect for enjoying a great meal. The combination of fantastic food, a rich history, and the exciting car show make Miner's Burgers a true gem in Union Gap. We happened to be there during one of the car shows in October and it was so much fun to see!

Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant

Located at the Valley Mall, Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant serves up traditional Mexican cuisine and carefully crafted tequila cocktails. The restaurant has a colorful and lively atmosphere with vibrant decor and warm hospitality. Their menu features an array of dishes, including mouthwatering carnitas, sizzling fajitas, savory enchiladas, and fresh ceviche. Not to be missed are their signature margaritas, which perfectly complement the flavors of their cuisine. Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant takes pride in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional family recipes. If you’re keen on sharing, be sure to try a Mexican molcajete!

I hope this inspires you to explore the beautiful fall colors and attractions of Union Gap, Washington for a memorable weekend getaway. Walk through apple orchards at a local Harvest Festival, enjoy local wines at nearby vineyards, or go on outdoor adventures in Yakima Valley. Union Gap is perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Its warm hospitality and seasonal charm make it an ideal fall retreat, creating unforgettable experiences for all visitors. Whether it's your first time or a return visit, Union Gap will leave a lasting impression on travelers seeking natural beauty and small-town charm.
