Chateau Victoria Hotel Review: One of the Best Inner Harbour Hotels in Victoria, BC

Victoria is one of the most walkable cities I've visited, which made choosing the right hotel even more important. Since we were taking the ferry from Seattle and weren't planning to rent a car, I wanted a hotel that would let us spend the weekend exploring on foot instead of relying on taxis or public transportation.
The walkability ended up being one of my favorite parts of this city. We wandered through the Inner Harbour, walked to restaurants and attractions, rented e-bikes to explore Dallas Road, and never once needed a taxi. Even after the sun went down, downtown Victoria felt lively and inviting, making evening strolls just as enjoyable as our daytime adventures.

Why I Chose to Stay at Chateau Victoria
Whenever I'm planning a trip, I spend a surprising amount of time researching hotels. I don't necessarily need the fanciest property, but I do want somewhere that feels like an extension of the trip itself. The location, atmosphere, and overall experience matter just as much to me as having a comfortable room.
For our long weekend in Victoria, I narrowed it down to two hotels: Chateau Victoria and the Fairmont Empress. The Fairmont is undeniably iconic, but I kept coming back to Chateau Victoria. I liked that it was locally owned, offered larger suites at a similar price, and felt a little quieter while still being just a short walk from the Inner Harbour.
Another thing that caught my attention was Clive's Classic Lounge. Knowing we could end the day with a great cocktail without leaving the hotel was a fun bonus that helped tip the scales.
Looking back, I'd make the same choice again. Chateau Victoria gave us exactly the kind of home base we were looking for, and its central location made it easy to explore Victoria at our own pace. To me, it’s the perfect option for first-time visitors who are looking to explore the city and have space to unwind.
First Impressions
One of the perks of staying at Chateau Victoria is the complimentary shuttle from the Victoria Clipper terminal. Since we arrived by ferry from Seattle without a car, it was a nice touch that made getting to the hotel completely hassle-free.
Our room was already ready when we arrived around lunchtime, and the front desk staff immediately made us feel welcome. They offered a few lunch recommendations nearby before handing over our keys, which was a thoughtful way to kick off our weekend in Victoria.
The lobby made a great first impression. It had recently been renovated and felt bright, elegant, and inviting, blending classic design with modern touches. While looking around, I spotted one of the hotel's most unique features: an incredibly detailed LEGO model of Chateau Victoria.
The model was built during COVID by longtime bellman Glenn Waddingham, who spent more than 18 months and over 500 hours recreating the hotel brick by brick. I had the chance to meet Glenn during my stay, and you could immediately see how much pride he takes in both the hotel and his work. One of my favorite details was learning that he included hotel staff and regular guests in the model, placing them in their favorite suites throughout the building. It's a small detail, but it says a lot about the people who work here and the welcoming atmosphere they've created.
Although the lobby became much livelier later that evening, check-in felt relaxed and unhurried. From the moment we arrived, Chateau Victoria had the warm, locally owned feel that first drew me to the hotel.
Inside the Rooms at Chateau Victoria
We stayed in Executive Penthouse Suite 1602, one of just three penthouse suites at Chateau Victoria. As soon as we walked in, my first thought was that it was bigger than my entire apartment back in Seattle. The hotel was originally built as an apartment building before being converted into a hotel, and you can definitely feel that extra space throughout the suite.
If you're considering one of the Executive Penthouse Suites, I'd happily book Suite 1602 again for a special occasion. That said, I also toured several of the recently renovated standard rooms during my stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to book one of those on a future visit either. They offer the same fantastic location and updated design at a much lower price point.
Room Layout
The layout included a full living room, dining area, kitchen, separate bedroom, and an oversized bathroom, giving us plenty of room to spread out between adventures. While we didn't spend much of our days in the room, it was the kind of place I looked forward to returning to each evening.
The standout feature was the 350-square-foot private balcony overlooking the Inner Harbour. Complete with comfortable patio furniture and a fire table, it quickly became my favorite part of the suite. We spent each evening watching the sunset with the fire going, and it ended up being one of my favorite memories from the trip.
Bed & Sleep Quality
The bed struck that perfect middle ground between soft and firm, making it incredibly comfortable after long days of walking around Victoria. Combined with blackout curtains and a surprisingly quiet room, I slept well every night and never heard noise from neighboring rooms or outside.
Bathroom
The bathroom was another highlight of Suite 1602. It featured a large walk-in shower, a spacious soaker tub, and good water pressure throughout. After spending the day exploring the city on foot, soaking in the tub before bed was exactly what I needed.
Dog Friendly Rooms
If you’re visiting Victoria with your furry friend, Chateau Victoria is a great option for dog-friendly hotels in Victoria, BC. There’s a $25 per-night pet fee, and the hotel is near two dog-friendly parks: Beach Hill Park and St. Anne’s Academy.
Dining & Drinks
One of the unexpected highlights of staying at Chateau Victoria was how often we found ourselves dining and drinking right at the hotel. Between Clive's Classic Lounge on the main floor and Vista 18 on the top floor, we hardly had to venture far for a great meal or cocktail.

Clive's quickly became our favorite cocktail bar in all of Victoria. In fact, we ended up here every evening before heading up to our room, and that wasn’t just because it was convenient. The atmosphere was sophisticated without feeling pretentious, and the bartenders were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Rather than serving overly sweet or gimmicky drinks, every cocktail felt thoughtfully crafted and beautifully balanced.
Between the two of us, we sampled several cocktails throughout our stay, including the Nitro Espresso Martini and the Beeswax Old Fashioned, which my partner still talks about as the best Old Fashioned he's ever had. Since the menu changes regularly, there's always something new to try if you're a returning guest.
We also ordered a few small plates one evening, which were good, but the cocktails are undoubtedly the star of the show. If you're planning to visit later in the evening, I'd recommend making a reservation. We usually arrived shortly after they opened and had no trouble finding a table, but when we stopped in for a nightcap after dinner one evening, the lounge was nearly full, and we had to wait a bit for a table.
Vista 18
On our final morning, we had breakfast at Vista 18 before catching the ferry back to Seattle. With panoramic views overlooking Victoria and the Inner Harbour, it's a beautiful place to ease into the morning, especially if you're not in a rush to head home.
Vista 18 uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients and is open for breakfast and dinner and has a happy hour.
While Clive's was the standout dining experience of our stay, Vista 18 was a lovely way to end the weekend before making our way back to the ferry terminal.
Location & Walkability
If I had to choose just one reason to stay at Chateau Victoria, it would be the location. Everything we wanted to see during our long weekend was within walking distance, so we never needed to rent a car, call a taxi, or use a rideshare service.
We arrived by ferry from Seattle and took advantage of the hotel's complimentary shuttle from the Victoria Clipper ferry terminal. Not only does the shuttle pick up and drop off guests at the ferry, but it also operates within a 2.5 km (1.5-mile) radius of the hotel, making it a convenient option if you don't feel like walking or have luggage to carry.
That said, we found ourselves exploring almost exclusively on foot. Within just a few minutes, we were strolling along the Inner Harbour and browsing the shops on Government Street. The Parliament Buildings and Royal BC Museum were about a 10 to 15-minute walk away, while Victoria's colorful Chinatown was an easy 15 to 20-minute walk from the hotel. One afternoon, we rented e-bikes from Pedego to explore Dallas Road and the waterfront near James Bay, which was a fun way to venture a little farther without needing a car.
One thing that really stood out was how comfortable we felt walking around downtown, even after dark. We'd often end the evening with cocktails at Clive's before wandering through the beautifully lit Inner Harbour on our way back from dinner. It made Victoria feel incredibly welcoming and added to the relaxed pace of the trip.

What I Loved Most About Chateau Victoria
There was a lot to love about staying at Chateau Victoria, but these are the things that really stood out to me:
An unbeatable location. Being able to walk almost everywhere made our weekend feel relaxed and effortless.
The spacious Executive Penthouse Suite. From the oversized balcony overlooking the Inner Harbour to the soaker tub, it felt like a true retreat after a day of exploring.
Clive's Classic Lounge. We ended every evening here, and it quickly became our favorite cocktail bar in Victoria.
The friendly staff. From recommending lunch spots at check-in to chatting with Glenn about his incredible LEGO model, everyone we met made us feel genuinely welcome.
The complimentary shuttle. It's a thoughtful perk for anyone arriving by ferry or traveling without a car.
A Few Things to Know Before Booking
If you're planning a special occasion, the Executive Penthouse Suites are worth the splurge, especially Suite 1602 with its private balcony and soaker tub.
For most travelers, one of the recently renovated standard rooms will offer excellent value while still giving you the same fantastic location.
If Clive's Classic Lounge is on your list, make a reservation if you're planning to visit later in the evening.
If you're arriving from Seattle on the FRS Victoria Clipper, don't forget to reserve the hotel's complimentary shuttle in advance.
You really don't need a car if you're planning to spend your time exploring downtown Victoria.

If you're looking for a large resort with extensive amenities or are traveling on a tight budget, there may be better options elsewhere in Victoria. But if your priority is a comfortable, walkable hotel in the heart of downtown, Chateau Victoria is one I'd happily book again.
From its welcoming staff and spacious rooms to its unbeatable location just steps from the Inner Harbour, it made exploring the city easy and enjoyable from the moment we arrived.
While the Executive Penthouse Suite was a memorable treat, I'd happily stay here again in one of the renovated standard rooms. The combination of thoughtful service, a locally owned atmosphere, and one of the best cocktail bars in the city makes Chateau Victoria a hotel I'd recommend to friends and family visiting Victoria.
