Everything to Know Before Booking the Lake Minnewanka Boat Cruise

With so many stunning lakes around Banff, it can be hard to know which ones are actually worth prioritizing. While places like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake tend to steal the spotlight, Lake Minnewanka ended up being one of my favorite lakes we visited during our trip.
It’s massive, deep blueish green in color, and far less chaotic than some of Banff’s more famous viewpoints. While the shoreline alone is worth visiting and perfect for a picnic, I think the real highlight is taking the Lake Minnewanka boat tour.
Between the scenery, the fascinating history, and the chance to experience the lake from the water, it offered something completely different from the rest of our trip.
Here’s everything to know before booking the Lake Minnewanka boat tour, including whether it’s worth it, what to expect, and tips for planning your visit.
The History of Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka is a glacial-fed lake and is the largest lake in Banff National Park. It also has a fascinating history that I was completely unaware of before visiting.
What many visitors don’t realize is that there is actually an entire submerged town beneath the lake.
In the early 1940s, the construction of a new dam completely submerged the resort town, raising water levels by almost 100 feet. Today, the remains of that town still rest beneath the surface, and it’s a popular dive site where divers explore parts of the well-preserved ghost town.

Lake Minnewanka Cruise Tickets and Pricing
Lake Minnewanka boat cruise tickets vary slightly depending on season, but expect pricing to be similar to other premium Banff excursions. The average price of one adult cruise ticket is $59.
Because this is one of the most popular tours in the area, I highly recommend booking in advance, especially during summer and early fall. If you’re visiting during peak season, don’t count on same-day availability.
The cruise includes:
A guided boat tour across the lake
Live narration from your captain/guide
Approximately one hour on the water
When you purchase your tickets, you’ll select a departure time of your choice, and you’ll need to arrive at Lake Minnewanka 15-30 minutes prior to check-in. Check-in is located inside the Black Anchor Snack Shop at the dock, and that’s where you’ll also meet your captain and guide before boarding the boat for the classic boat tour.
How to Get to Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka is located just outside downtown Banff and is an easy 20-minute drive from town. That said, transportation logistics are worth planning for. If there’s one thing I learned while spending time in Banff, it's that getting around isn't easy.
Driving and Parking at Lake Minnewanka
Like many attractions in Banff, parking at Lake Minnewanka can be a challenge. Lots fill quickly, especially in peak season, and traffic around the lake can become frustrating midday.
If you want to try to drive yourself, you can park at the Lake Minnewanka Parking Lot and walk to the shore. This parking lot is open year-round, but fills up very quickly in summer and early fall May-October).
The town of Banff has rolled out a shuttle system called Roam Public Transit that takes visitors to major attractions, including Lake Minnewanka, to reduce traffic, as tourism in the area has skyrocketed over the years.
Taking the Roam Public Transit Shuttle to Lake Minnewanka
We took the shuttle from downtown Banff, and I highly recommend doing the same if you’re visiting from May through early October.
It was seamless, stress-free, and saved us from having to deal with parking altogether. Honestly, if there’s a shuttle option anywhere in Banff, I recommend using it!
To get to Lake Minnewanka from downtown Banff on public transit, you’ll take the Route 6. It departs from Banff High School, and there’s a free public parking lot off Moose Street at the entrance of town where you can leave your car all day if you’re not staying in downtown Banff.
The cost for this shuttle to Lake Minnewanka is $2 for adults and $1 for seniors and children. Kids under 12 ride for free, and if you already have a Lake Minnewanka cruise ticket, you’ll ride for free too!
The ride to Lake Minnewanka takes 25 minutes, but I would recommend getting on an earlier bus in case the shuttles are full.
My Experience on the Lake Minnewanka Boat Tour
As I mentioned earlier, this was one of my favorite things we did during our Banff trip. We arrived a little early for our cruise, which gave us time to walk around the shoreline before boarding and take in the views.
The lake was even prettier in person than I expected. The deep blue water, surrounding peaks, and sheer size of the lake immediately stood out. It was also a bright, sunny day, so the water glistened, and I was excited to get out on it.
What the Cruise Is Like
Our boat tour was sold out, but surprisingly, it never felt crowded.
There were around 20 passengers on board, and the boat was spacious enough that everyone had room to move around, take photos, and enjoy the ride comfortably.
Once we pulled away from shore, it quickly became clear why taking the cruise is so worthwhile. The perspective from the water makes you realize just how massive the lake truly is.
It felt peaceful, scenic, and relaxing in a way that contrasted nicely with the busier, more active parts of our Banff itinerary.
What We Learned on the Tour
One of the biggest surprises for me was how much I enjoyed the narration. Sometimes guided tours can feel cheesy or overly scripted, but this was the complete opposite.
Our guide was incredibly engaging and informative. You could tell she genuinely cared about the land and wanted everyone on board to understand the region’s history and significance.
We learned about the submerged town beneath the lake, how divers explore parts of it today, the history of the surrounding area, and some wildlife facts about the region. It elevated the experience far beyond a mere scenic boat ride.
Best Time for the Lake Minnewanka Cruise
We visited in early September, and as far as weather goes, I thought it was an ideal time to go.
The weather was sunny and warm without being overly hot. September marks the tail end of this area's peak season, and although things are beginning to wind down, Labor Day weekend is still one of the busiest times of year. We visited during Labor Day weekend, and it was a madhouse - I’d recommend avoiding that weekend if you can.
In general, I’d recommend:
Visiting in late spring through early fall for the best weather (May, June, or late September to early October)
Booking a morning or late afternoon cruise for softer light and potentially lighter crowds
Tips for Visiting Lake Minnewanka
If you’re planning to do the Lake Minnewanka boat tour, here are my biggest tips:
Take the shuttle if possible. Parking is difficult and not worth the stress.
Book your tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
Arrive a little early so you can walk around the lake before boarding.
Dress in layers. Even on warm days, it can get breezy on the water.
Plan for this to be a more relaxed activity. It’s a great break from the more physically demanding adventures in Banff.
Is Lake Minnewanka Worth Visiting?
Even if you skip the boat tour, Lake Minnewanka is worth adding to your Banff itinerary. It’s one of the most beautiful lakes in the area and feels noticeably different from many of the nearby glacier-fed lakes.
The first thing that struck me was how vast it is. Photos really don’t do it justice. It feels much larger in person than I expected, and the water is a deep, rich blue that stands out from the lighter turquoise lakes Banff is known for.
The surrounding mountain scenery is stunning, and the lake has a much more open, expansive feel than some of the nearby, more enclosed alpine lakes.
Is the Lake Minnewanka Boat Tour Worth It?
The Lake Minnewanka boat tour is absolutely worth it. If you are comfortable on boats, I highly recommend adding this tour to your itinerary!
While you can admire the lake from shore, the boat tour gives you a completely different perspective and lets you experience just how massive the lake really is. Unless you have your own boat, it’s the only way to get out on the water.
What made it especially worth it for me was that it offered a nice change of pace from the rest of our Banff itinerary. So many activities in the area involve hiking, walking, or long scenic drives, and it was nice to have something a little more relaxed while still feeling immersive.
It was scenic, informative, and honestly one of the most enjoyable ways we spent a morning in Banff.
It combined stunning scenery, fascinating history, and a slower pace that felt like a welcome break from the constant hiking and sightseeing.
If you’re trying to decide whether it’s worth booking, I would absolutely recommend it, especially if you enjoy learning about the places you visit and want a unique perspective on one of Banff’s most beautiful lakes.
