The Banff Gondola is one of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park, and if you’ve looked at ticket prices, you may be wondering if it’s actually worth it.
After doing it myself, I can confidently say yes, but with a few caveats.
The views from the top are stunning, the ride itself is fun, and when paired with dinner at Sky Bistro, it becomes one of the most memorable experiences you can have in Banff that doesn’t include hiking. That said, it’s also busy, requires a little planning, and is definitely something you’ll want to book ahead.
Here’s everything to know before riding the Banff Gondola, including ticket prices, parking tips, what it’s like at the top, and my honest review of Sky Bistro.
What Is the Banff Gondola?
The Banff Gondola opened in the late 1950s, and it takes visitors to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, where you’ll get sweeping 360-degree views over the town of Banff, the surrounding mountain ranges, and the Bow Valley.
A few quick facts:
Ride Time: About 8 minutes each way
Gondola Size: 4 adult passengers
Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
Elevation at Summit: Approximately 7,490 feet
Time Needed: Plan for 2 to 3 hours minimum, longer if dining at Sky Bistro
Once at the top, there’s so much more than just the view. The summit features multiple observation decks with seating areas, interpretive exhibits, paved walking paths, and restaurants at various price points, including a Starbucks coffee shop.
Is the Banff Gondola Worth It?
There’s no denying that the Banff Gondola is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area, but after experiencing it, I would say yes, I think the Banff Gondola is worth it, especially for first-time visitors.
It’s one of the easiest ways to get panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies without leaving downtown Banff, and the summit experience feels more developed than many gondolas I’ve done elsewhere. The views of the Rockies from the observation decks are absolutely stunning. We took the gondola up right before sunset, took in the views, and then had dinner at Sky Bistro. That said, whether it’s worth it for you depends on your trip style.
I think it’s especially worth it if:
You want incredible views without hiking
You’re visiting Banff for the first time
You plan to pair it with dinner at Sky Bistro
You visit in the morning or evening to avoid peak crowds
If you’re on a tight budget and already planning multiple hikes with viewpoints, you may not need it. But for most first-time visitors, I think it’s a worthwhile experience.
Pro-Tip: Since you only need to spend a few hours at the Banff Gondola, and it’s ideal to visit in the morning or evening, I recommend spending the first half of your day on a boat tour of Lake Minnewanka and then ending your day at the summit for sunset. You can organize this on your own, or you can book a tour to avoid dealing with logistics and parking.
Banff Gondola Tickets and Price
Banff Gondola ticket prices vary by season and demand, but expect to pay a premium, especially during summer. Summer tickets start at $60 CAN, with children 5 or under being free. Winter rates are slightly lower as this is their off-season. Because it’s such a popular attraction, I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance.
A few important things to know:
Tickets are timed entry
Popular time slots sell out
Prices are set using a demand scale so they change depending on the seasonality
Walk-up availability is not guaranteed
You’ll choose a time slot when booking, and I recommend arriving about 15 to 20 minutes early.
How to Get to the Banff Gondola
The Banff Gondola is located just outside downtown Banff at the base of Sulphur Mountain.
It’s a quick drive from town, but transportation logistics are not as easy as you’d think and are worth planning ahead for.
Banff Gondola Parking
Parking at the Banff Gondola is extremely limited. Honestly, I would consider self-parking mostly out of the question during peak season unless you arrive very early. We saw tons of cars being turned away, but they do have reserved parking for travelers with disabilities.
Banff Gondola Shuttle Bus
Taking the Banff Gondola shuttle bus is by far the easiest option. This is what we did, and it was really easy and straightforward. Banff has put together a great shuttle system during the peak summer months that takes visitors to popular destinations such as Lake Louise, Lake Minnewanka, and the base of Sulfur Mountain.
If you’re staying in Banff, I strongly recommend utilizing the shuttle service rather than driving yourself. Pick-up points are throughout downtown Banff, making it very convenient and helping reduce traffic. There’s also a large parking lot right off the entrance to town that we used each time since we stayed in the nearby town of Golden instead of staying in Banff.
My Experience Riding the Banff Gondola
The Ride Up
We arrived about 20 minutes before our time slot and still had to wait in a short line before boarding. This is when we realized that this is by far one of the most popular attractions in Banff. But even with large crowds, the process was smooth and well-organized overall.
We shared our gondola cabin with two other guests, and the ride up was very pleasant. The ride to the top is quick, but a lot of ground is covered with a steep incline. Sulphur Mountain is surprisingly steep, so you definitely notice the incline as you ascend. It adds a little adrenaline to the ride without being scary.
The view during the ride up gets more beautiful the further you climb. There’s a trail up the mountain that visitors can take, which can be viewed on the gondola ride. This trail is more difficult and can take 2-3 hours to complete each way. Many hikers choose to take the trail one way and then purchase a one-way gondola ticket for the return.
What It’s Like at the Top
The views from the top are beautiful and absolutely the highlight of the experience.
Once you arrive, there’s:
A large observation deck
Multiple scenic lookout points
Sulphur Mountain boardwalk
An interpretive center with exhibits about the mountain and the gondola
Even though it was busy, the summit was spread out enough that it never felt overly cramped. The only time that I felt a little cramped was inside at the interpretive centers, so I didn’t spend a ton of time there.
Outside, there were plenty of people around, but we still had space to walk, take photos, and enjoy the views comfortably. One of the main viewing platforms features a bear statue made of mirrors, and it’s a great place for a photo op!
Dining at Sky Bistro Banff
Pairing the Banff Gondola with dinner at Sky Bistro elevated the entire experience and made the gondola feel even more worth the cost. I initially thought dining at Sky Bistro could be gimmicky or overpriced, but I found it well worth it, and the food was high-quality.
Sky Bistro has a cozy, mountain lodge atmosphere that feels slightly upscale yet not overly formal or stuffy. It struck a really nice balance between feeling elevated and not intimidating. Some guests were dressed up for dinner, but many were in normal travel clothes. We had spent the first half of the day on a boat tour of Lake Minnewanka, then explored downtown Banff, and showed up in hiking gear. While we were probably the most underdressed table there, no one seemed to care, and we felt perfectly comfortable.
My friend and I shared a bottle of wine, pâté with bread, and chowder to start. We were seated next to the window and loved soaking up the views as we went through the highlights of our time in the Canadian Rockies so far. For mains, I ordered the scallops and my friend ordered the pork loin with seasonal vegetables. Both were absolutely delicious!
The food genuinely exceeded my expectations for what could have easily been a “views over food” tourist restaurant.
Reservation Tips
Reservations are competitive and should be booked well in advance.
I booked ours at least a month ahead, and I would recommend doing the same if you want a prime dinner slot - especially in the peak summer months.
Tips for Visiting the Banff Gondola
Book tickets in advance. Popular time slots can sell out
Make restaurant reservations early. Especially for Sky Bistro
Take the shuttle. Parking is extremely limited
Visit in the morning or evening. Crowds tend to be lighter
Dress in layers. It can be cooler at the summit
Budget extra time. You’ll likely want longer than expected at the top
The Banff Gondola is touristy, yes, but it’s touristy for a reason. The views are incredible, the ride is fun, and the summit experience is very well done.
While it’s not cheap, I think it’s absolutely worth it if you’re visiting Banff for the first time, especially if you pair it with dinner at Sky Bistro for a full evening experience.
If you can, go early in the morning or late in the evening, book everything in advance, and skip the parking headache by taking the shuttle. With these steps in place, your experience will be a heck of a lot smoother!
Happy travels!
